Contractors happier and paid better than their Permanent colleagues
The report , The Lure of Autonomy: A Global Study of Professional Workers, surveyed more than 2,000 contractors worldwide (including 197 from Australia) and found that contractors are not as motivated by traditional perks such as employment security, retirement benefits and paid holidays. It found that typical professional contractors were slightly older than their full-time peers, more experienced, have higher incomes, and were more likely to be male.

Contractors were also more likely to be satisfied with the type of work they do, their employer and the industry in which they work.

Of all the countries surveyed, Australia recorded the widest gap in level of experience between contractors and full-time professionals. On average, contractors had about 20 years' experience compared to full-time employees who had about 13 years.

The biggest challenges for contractors included fluctuations in workload, is the need to market themselves while working on a project and the lack of a regular salary.

Hudson Australia/New Zealand CEO Anne Hatton said: "This research provides a wake-up call for employers. The findings of the study suggest that employers must start taking notice of the changing composition of the workforce and what that means in terms of staff engagement and management."

She said smart employers are now realising they must consider the needs of their contractors as well as their full-time employees, to remain ahead of the competition.

"Independent professionals are a cross-generational phenomenon that will play an increasingly important role in the Australian workplace," said Hatton.

"This segment of non-traditional employees is expected to explode as more and more professionals choose to work for themselves," she said.

"According to ABS statistics, the number of contractors in the workforce is growing at a rate of almost 20% per annum, and if this trend continues, it is estimated that the majority of Australian workers will be contractors or casuals by 2015," she said.

Lorne Lee, General Manager for Australian contractor management company ITG, agrees. “The trends worldwide are moving towards casual and temporary labour and Australia is no different. The increase in professional contractors over the past eight to ten years has been phenomenal and the average permanent role is now less than two years. Incredible when you think that the average tenure for permanent employees ten years ago was more like seven years.”

Lorne continues. “We have seen a huge shift to project-based assignments which has had a massive impact on how employers recruit and retain staff in these areas. Large consulting companies now hire staff on a project by project basis so and their tenure is ultimately determined by the requirements of the end client.”
